It said Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed an early conclusion of the Agreement on Facilitation of Travel between the people of the two countries. They noted that the excellent ties between the two countries had been strengthened through regular exchanges of high-level visits as well as the increasing contacts between the people of the two countries, it added.
The two foreign ministers held talks during Anifah’s official visit to Russia from July 9 to 11. Wisma Putra said the ministers took note of the growing bilateral relations between the two countries and remained committed to further strengthening bilateral cooperation at all levels.
“Both ministers concurred that the two countries should undertake greater efforts to enhance cooperation in various fields, especially in areas such as trade and investment, higher education, tourism, defence as well as science and technology,” it said.
The two ministers also expressed their satisfaction on the final stage of negotiations on the bilateral agreement between the governments of Malaysia and Russia on the establishment of a joint Malaysia-Russia commission for economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation (ESTC). “Both ministers are looking forward to signing the ESTC agreement which provides for a bilateral mechanism to further enhance bilateral relations between the countries,” Wisma Putra said.
During the visit, Anifah also had a meeting with Alexey Pushkov, chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Russian State Duma. Anifah hosted a ‘buka puasa’ for the Malaysian community residing in Moscow, among them students, and was interviewed by the Russia Today TV station.
